11-Bromo-1-undecanol (11BU) is a quaternary ammonium salt that has been shown to be effective against the larvae of the moth P. xylostella. 11BU is synthesized by reacting stannous octoate with 1-undecanol in the presence of an oxidizing agent, such as hydrogen peroxide. This chemical has been shown to have anti-inflammatory activities due to its ability to inhibit the release of inflammatory cells and lipid mediators, such as leukotrienes and prostaglandins, from these cells. The synthesis of 11BU can be modified by substituting a fatty acid for 1-undecanol or adding a hydroxyl group to produce a fatty acid ester.
