2-(Benzofuran-3-yl)acetic acid is a reactive compound with a molecular electrostatic potential that is high enough to be considered as a good nucleophile. It has been shown to react with butyric acid, a gaseous compound, in the presence of an electron donor such as indole-3-propionic acid or phenol. The reaction product of 2-(benzofuran-3-yl)acetic acid and butyric acid is called 2-(5H)-furanone. This type of reaction is called an electrophilic addition and can be used to produce fluorescent probes for detecting butyric acid or other gaseous compounds.
