2-Benzylthioadenosine is a nucleotide that is synthesized from adenosine. It is a competitive inhibitor of the uptake of adenine nucleotides and has been shown to inhibit the postsynaptic potential and depress the central nervous system. 2-Benzylthioadenosine also inhibits the activity of adenylate cyclase, which regulates the synthesis of cAMP, an important second messenger in neurotransmission. This drug may be useful for treating depression and high blood pressure. 2-Benzylthioadenosine has been shown to have a higher specificity for n6-methyladenosine than for other adenines, which may be due to its ability to form a stable hydrogen bond with this base.
