N-Benzylacrylamide is a monomer that is used in the production of polymers. It is soluble in trifluoroacetic acid and water, but not in alcohols and ethers. N-Benzylacrylamide has a viscosity of 1.6 Pa·s at 20 °C and an amide group with primary amino functionality. It can be synthesized from acrylonitrile and ammonia, and then hydrolyzed to produce an n-oxide. This product has been shown to have antiviral properties against human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) as well as other viruses, such as herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). N-Benzylacrylamide also has newtonian behavior and can be used for clinical chemistry analyses. In addition, this product is useful for the polymerization of β-unsaturated ketones or electron deficient compounds.
