2,5-Bis(4-nitrophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole is an acid that has a dehydrating effect. It is the main component of a reagent used to synthesize oxadiazoles. This chemical can be prepared by reacting 4-nitrobenzoic acid with hydrochloric acid in the presence of a base. The reaction takes place according to the following equation:
2C6H4NO2 + HCl + NaOH → 2C6H5N3O2 + NaCl + H2O
Theory suggests that the reactant and product are in equilibrium with each other, and that this equilibrium can be shifted by changing the temperature or concentration of one of the reactants. The Langmuir isotherm describes how changes in concentration affect the equilibrium position. A technique called single-crystal x-ray diffraction can be used to study this equilibrium shift over time.
