1,3-Bisbenzyl-2-oxoimidazolidine-4,5-dicarboxylicacid is an anhydride that is used in the synthesis of epoxides. It reacts with a hydroxyl group to form a cyclic anhydride with the loss of water. The reaction is exothermic and can be conducted under constant pressure. 1,3-Bisbenzyl-2-oxoimidazolidine-4,5-dicarboxylicacid has been shown to react with methyl ethyl ketone in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid to form 2,5-dimethylhexane. This process can be improved by using a copper catalyst at a lower temperature and pressure.
