2-tert-Butyl-1H-indole is an alkylation that has been used in the synthesis of a variety of different indole alkaloids. In order to synthesize this compound, 2-tert-butylbenzaldehyde was reacted with nitrosobenzene and iron to produce the desired product. The reaction mechanism for this reaction involves the formation of an iminium ion intermediate followed by a proton transfer. This reaction can be catalyzed by certain metal complexes, such as iron. Preparation of this compound can be accomplished using a variety of methods, including those that are preparative.
