5-(Benzyloxy)-2-nitro-4-methoxybenzaldehyde is a redox quaternization agent that can be used in the synthesis of peptides and other biomolecules. It is soluble in organic solvents and reacts with amines to form stable quinolinium salts. 5-(Benzyloxy)-2-nitro-4-methoxybenzaldehyde is also a potent inhibitor of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which leads to increased levels of neurotransmitter acetylcholine. This compound has been monitored for its stability and found to be sensitive to oxidation.
