2-Bromopurine is an analog of the naturally occurring purine, adenine. It has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of DNA synthesis in both bacterial and mammalian cells. 2-Bromopurine has been shown to react with hydrophobic amino acids, such as methionine and tryptophan, in proteins to form crosslinks that inhibit protein synthesis. 2-Bromopurine is effective against tuberculosis and has been used for the treatment of this disease since the 1950s.
