N,N-Bis(2-hydroxyethyl)ethylenediamine is a fluorescent probe that can be used to detect the cytoskeletal changes in cells undergoing apoptosis. This chemical binds to DNA and alters the fluorescence of cells. When cells are undergoing apoptosis, the DNA condenses and the cytoskeletal proteins become more rigid. N,N-Bis(2-hydroxyethyl)ethylenediamine is also used as a fluorophore for use in techniques such as flow cytometry and microscopy. In addition, it has been shown to bind to Streptococcus mutans bacteria, which are associated with dental plaque formation.
