Description

2-tert-Butylimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine is an organic compound that contains a heterocyclic ring with two nitrogen atoms. It can be synthesized by the formylation of ethyl propiolate followed by reaction with ammonium salt. The mechanism of this reaction has not yet been elucidated, but it is thought to involve the intermediacy of a 2-aminopyridine intermediate.

The transition state in this reaction is characterized by a 3-membered ring and its mechanistic studies reveal that the oxidant used in this process is arylated. The product can be denitrogenated to produce an imidazopyridine.
