1,3-Benzodioxole-4-carboxylic acid is a multinuclear molecule that functions as an antibacterial agent. The compound inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the carboxylate group of bacterial enzymes and preventing the formation of an enzyme-substrate complex. This effect leads to a decrease in the production of cell wall components and an increase in cell death. The mechanism by which 1,3-benzodioxole-4-carboxylic acid inhibits tumor growth is not well understood, but it has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of mcf-7 cells in vitro. It also has preservative properties due to its ability to bind with bacteria and fungi on surfaces, such as wood and metal.
