Description

2,5-Bis[(1,3-dioxobutyl)amino]benzenesulfonic acid is a synthetic substrate that is used to measure the activity of serine proteases. It has been shown to be effective against wild-type mice and reversibly inhibits the enzyme activity of serine proteases in vitro. This substrate has a neutral pH and can be used in blood samples or clinical chemistry as an indicator for the presence of serine protease activity. The mechanism behind this inhibition is still unclear, but it may be due to the sulfonate group being cleaved off by hydrogen fluoride or other reactive species formed during the enzymatic reaction.
