1,1'-Biphenyl,4-bromo-4'-butyl (BBBB) is a boron-containing compound that reacts with sodium borohydride to form the corresponding alcohol. The reduction of BBBB (1.0 g) with sodium borohydride (0.2 g) in methanol (10 mL) at room temperature for 6 h gave 1,1'-biphenyl,4-hydroxy-4'-butanol as a white solid in high yield. This reaction can be used for the synthesis of heterocycles from benzene and phenylselenol.
