It interacts with the plasma membrane of the parasites, which leads to the crosslinking of lipid bilayers. This interaction may be due to its bifunctional nature as an antimalarial drug that also has diagnostic properties. The clickable property of this compound makes it possible for researchers to detect the presence of 1,12-bis[4-methyl-5-(2-hydroxyethyl)thiazol-3-ium]-3-[(2E)-hexadecenyl]-dodecanedibromide in a patient's plasma, by detecting the characteristic "click" sound when this compound interacts with a surface coated with gold or silver nanoparticles.
