Description:
1-Benzyl-4-oxo-piperidine-3-carboxylic acid is an alkyl ester that is also a chiral compound. It is synthesized from the reaction of benzaldehyde with 1,1'-carbonyldiimidazole in the presence of copper(II) chloride as a catalyst. The product is purified by recrystallization from ethyl acetate and hexanes, followed by distillation. This compound has been shown to catalyze the transfer of hydrogen and other organic molecules into water during phase transfer.
