Description:

4,4'-Bis(bromomethyl)diphenylether is a diphosphine ligand that binds to metal ions. It has been shown to catalyse the conversion of formaldehyde to methylene glycol in the presence of an acid. This compound can be used as a catalyst for this reaction in organic synthesis. The yield of 4,4'-bis(bromomethyl)diphenylether is low because it is not commercially available and must be synthesized from commercially available starting materials. This compound also spontaneously forms dinuclear carboxylic acid complexes when heated or cooled, which are thermodynamically stable at room temperature. 4,4'-Bis(bromomethyl)diphenylether can also be synthesized by reacting phenol with bromomethane in the presence of an acidic catalyst. The resulting product is purified by recrystallization from methanol and isolated yield is high.
