Tert-Butyl (2S)-3-amino-2-(benzyloxycarbonylamino)propanoate is a guanidine derivative that has been shown to be mediated by the cyclic GMP pathway. It has been shown to inhibit bone resorption and increase bone formation in animal models of osteoporosis. Tert-butyl (2S)-3-amino-2-(benzyloxycarbonylamino)propanoate has also been shown to have lipophilic properties, which may account for its ability to penetrate the blood brain barrier. This drug is a selective antagonist of cyclic GMP, preventing phosphodiesterase from hydrolyzing it and allowing cGMP levels to increase. Tert-butyl (2S)-3-amino-2-(benzyloxycarbonylamino)propanoate also inhibits thiophene and sulfonamide synthesis in bacteria, including methicillin
