1,2,4-Butanetricarboxylic acid is an aliphatic hydrocarbon that is used as a cross-linking agent. The reaction between 1,2,4-butanetricarboxylic acid and calcium carbonate produces a high resistance material that can be used as a corrosion inhibitor. 1,2,4-Butanetricarboxylic acid has been shown to inhibit the growth of infectious bacteria such as Salmonella typhi and Mycobacterium tuberculosis by inhibiting the synthesis of polycarboxylic acids such as polyacrylic acid. This compound also inhibits the formation of adhesins on bacterial cell walls and interferes with bacterial protein synthesis.
