Synonyms:
  • 4-Bromo-2-cyanonitrobenzene5-Bromo-2-nitro-benzonitrile2-nitro-5-bromobenzonitrile
Description:

5-Bromo-2-nitrobenzonitrile (5BNB) is a monomer that is used in the production of polymers and high molecular weight, nucleophilic carboxylic acids. It has a molecular weight of 106.09 g/mol and a carboxylic acid group content of 18.4%. The yield for 5BNB is 58% with an acidity level of 4.3%. 5BNB can be synthesized from benzoic acid and nitric acid through nitration and hydrolysis, respectively. The solubility of 5BNB in water is poor at pH below 3, but it can be dissolved in organic solvents such as acetone or chloroform at any pH. 5BNB is also soluble in water at pH above 10.
