5-Bromo-N-methylpyrimidin-2-amine is a pyrimidine ring that is used in the synthesis of aliphatic amines. It can be prepared by reacting diethylamine with methanol and then reacting the product with methyl iodide to form 5-bromomethylpyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione. The reaction is completed by heating the mixture and adding aqueous hydrochloric acid to convert it to 5-(5-bromomethylpyrimidin-2-ylamino)benzaldehyde. The yield of this process is about 50%. When irradiated with ultraviolet light, 5-(5-bromomethylpyrimidin-2ylamino)benzaldehyde reacts with oxygen to form 5-(5'-hydroxypyrimidin 2ylamino)benzaldehyde and is dehalogenated in the process
