Description

5,6-Bis(benzyloxy)-1H-indole (DBE) is a synthetic analog of melatonin. It has been shown to have significant effects on the hydration and cuticle of pupae by binding to tyrosine residues in the protein structure. DBE also binds to DNA and has been shown to be an effective agent for chromosome transport. This compound is not active in dopamine synthesis but does have neurotrophic properties that are similar to those of dopamine. DBE has been shown to inhibit eumelanin synthesis by interfering with the conversion of tyrosine into dopaquinone. DBE is also capable of binding to polyelectrolytes, which may account for its anisotropic behavior.
