2-Bromo-1,3,5-tri-tert-butylbenzene is a brominated analog of 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene. It is used in the industrial production of selenium dioxide by cross coupling. This compound is often used as a reagent for the formation of carbonyl compounds and amides from arenes and amines. 2-Bromo-1,3,5-tri-tert-butylbenzene can be prepared by reacting naphthalene with phosphine gas or chlorine gas at elevated temperatures and pressures. The reaction requires catalysts such as copper(II) chloride or silver nitrate to promote the reaction. 2B2TBBA has been shown to be reactive towards halogens with an activation energy of 79 kJ/mol.
