2-Bromo-N-methylbenzenesulfonamide is an amide derivative of bromobenzenesulfonic acid. It is useful in organic synthesis as a reagent for the transformation of benzoic acid derivatives to amides, esters and other functional groups. This transformation can be accomplished by either halogenating or reducing the carboxylic acid group. Halogenation is regioselective, so it can be used to convert one or two substituents on the benzoic acid derivative to a desired functional group such as amines, nitriles, sulfones, and sulfoxides.
