1-Bromoethyl acetate is an extractant that can be used as a solvent in chromatographic analysis. It is characterized by high chemical stability, low toxicity and low volatility. This compound has been shown to be an effective extractant for cefadroxil, which is a broad spectrum antibiotic used in the treatment of bacterial infections. The extraction process is accomplished using a chlorinated solvent, such as 1-bromoethyl acetate, to remove impurities from the antibiotic preparation, such as acetaldehyde and chloride ions. Acetaldehyde is removed by adding sodium carbonate to the mixture and then passing it through a column filled with an organic solvent such as ethyl acetate or hexane. Chloride ions are removed by passing the mixture through a column filled with an acidic catalyst such as hydrochloric acid. Linear calibration curves are used to quantify the amount of cefadroxil in 1-bromoethyl acetate extracts.
