4,4'-Bis(carbazolyl)-1,1'-biphenyl is a transcriptional inhibitor that is used as an antidiabetic agent. It inhibits the transcription of gene expression by binding to the DNA-binding domain of the protein p21 and inhibiting p21-dependent transcriptional activation. 4,4'-Bis(carbazolyl)-1,1'-biphenyl has also been shown to bind to toll-like receptors in the cell membrane and inhibit their growth factor activity. This drug has been shown to have a hypoglycemic effect in mice by preventing the release of insulin from pancreatic beta cells.
