2-tert-Butyl-5-methyl-phenol is a reaction product of n-dimethyl formamide and 2,5-dichlorophenol. It is used as a reagent for the conversion of fatty acids to methyl ketones in organic synthesis. It has been shown to have an efficient method for the conversion of fatty acids to methyl ketones. The reaction yield can be increased by using solid catalysts such as silica gel or aluminum oxide. 2-tert-Butyl-5-methyl phenol is cytotoxic to human liver cells and can cause mitochondrial cytochrome c release from the mitochondria in rat liver microsomes. It also has been found to be toxic to plants and causes environmental pollution when released into the environment.
