2-Butylaminoethanol is a compound that contains hydrochloric acid, amines, and a hydroxyl group. It is used as an antimicrobial agent and has been shown to have inhibitory effects against many bacteria. 2-Butylaminoethanol's antimicrobial activity is due to its ability to cause aggregation of the bacterial cell membrane by reacting with the fatty acids in the cell membrane. The reaction mechanism involves an initial reaction between the carbonyl group and the polycarboxylic acid groups on the cell surface, which leads to a decrease in cell surface charge. This leads to an increase in the permeability of the cells, which causes water loss and eventually death. Activation energies for this reaction are found by titration calorimetry experiments and are 59 kJ/mol for 2-butoxyethylene glycol ethers and 64 kJ/mol for 2-butyliminoethanol.
