Benzyl-2,2,2-trichloroacetamide is a synthetic compound that reacts with hydrochloric acid to form benzyl chloride. It has been used as an intermediate in the synthesis of monoclonal antibodies and antimicrobial agents. Benzyl-2,2,2-trichloroacetamide is used as a research tool for determining the effect of conjugates on disaccharides. It also has anticancer effects and suppresses mitogenic activity. This agent has also been shown to have anti-cancer properties because it inhibits the synthesis of DNA and RNA. The mechanism for this inhibition is thought to be due to benzyl-2,2,2-trichloroacetamide's ability to react with hydroxyl groups in nucleic acids.
