Product Information
- Benzo[1,3]Dioxole-5-Carbothioic Acid Amide
- 3,4-(Methylenedioxy)thiobenzamide
1,3-Benzodioxole-5-carbothioamide (BCA) is a cross-linking agent that has shown to have hemolytic activity and exhibit light sensitivity. It also has been found to have a cytotoxic effect on human lung epithelial cells in tissue culture. BCA has been shown to be cytotoxic to weevils, suggesting it may have potential as an insecticide. The compound is also known to cause inflammatory diseases such as primary pulmonary hypertension in animals. More specifically, BCA can inhibit the production of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α).
BCA binds to DNA by intercalation and can increase the rate of protein synthesis in cells. This binding prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division.
