4-Borono-dl-phenylalanine is a boron-containing drug that has been shown to inhibit tumor growth. It is structurally related to phenylalanine, which is an amino acid. Boron compounds are effective against malignant brain tumors and carcinoid syndrome because they are metabolized into borinic acid, which inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins by blocking cyclooxygenase. 4-Borono-dl-phenylalanine inhibits the production of prostaglandins in vitro by binding to the enzyme and preventing it from functioning. The compound also exhibits radiation and radiomimetic properties in vitro as well as in vivo in a fetal bovine model. 4-Borono-dl-phenylalanine has been shown to be toxic when administered at high doses, with acute toxicities including vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, lethargy, and skin cancer observed in mice.
