The compound can be used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other compounds, such as 1,2,4-trioxane. 1-Bromo-3-hydroxynaphthalene can also be used in asymmetric hydrogenation reactions to produce optically pure products from a variety of substrates. This reaction was first discovered by Kagan and coworkers in 1964 and has been studied extensively since then. The binap ligand can be used for asymmetric hydrogenations using this compound as the starting material.
