4,4'-Bipyridine-2,2'-dicarboxylic acid is a dihydrate that has been found to be a potent inhibitor of bacterial growth and a potential antibacterial agent. 4,4'-Bipyridine-2,2'-dicarboxylic acid has the capability to form hydrogen bonds with the amino acid side chains of proteins and thus disrupts their zwitterionic form. This prevents the protein from functioning correctly and leads to cell death by inhibiting protein synthesis. The crystal structure of this compound is also zwitterionic in nature.
