Product Information

Name:
Bis(2- bromophenyl) disulfide
Description:

Bis(2-bromophenyl) disulfide is a disulfide, an organic compound with two sulfur atoms. It is used in medicine as a competitive inhibitor of dopamine β-hydroxylase, which converts dopamine to norepinephrine. Bis(2-bromophenyl) disulfide can be chloromethylated to yield bis(2-chlorophenyl) disulfide, which has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects. Bis(2-bromophenyl) disulfide has also been shown to be a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme arene oxide synthase from rat brain and other tissues. This drug can be synthesized by reacting 2 equivalents of bromine with 2 equivalents of sulfide in alkali metal or alkaline earth metal chloride solution. Bis(2-bromophenyl) disulfide is insoluble in water and soluble in organic solvents such as ethers and benzene.
