5-Bromo-pentanal is a chemical that has been shown to have anticancer activity. It is a thermodynamically stable compound and has a number of functional groups including an aldehyde group. 5-Bromo-pentanal also has radical scavenging activity, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In vivo studies have shown that 5-bromopentanal inhibits the growth of human breast cancer cells in culture when it is administered at concentrations of 0.1% or higher. This chemical has been found to inhibit the expression of elongate, an enzyme involved in the synthesis of fatty acids, by binding to elongate's transcription factor site. 5-Bromopentanal also inhibits the production of fatty acids by binding to elongate's transcription factor site.
