- Buforin II
Buforin II is an antimicrobial peptide that belongs to the class of natural compounds. It has shown antibacterial efficacy against a variety of bacteria and fungi in experimental models, with the most potent activity against gram-positive bacteria. Buforin II is active against intracellular targets such as ribosomes, but it does not have a significant effect on DNA replication and transcription. The structure analysis of buforin II revealed that it is composed of two strands of antiparallel beta-sheet and four alpha-helices in a left handed configuration. This structure suggests that buforin II may act by binding to lipid bilayers in the bacterial cell membrane, causing changes in membrane permeability and leakage of cellular components. Buforin II also inhibits protein synthesis by inhibiting the function of ribosomes and other proteins involved in protein synthesis.
