Bunitrolol is a beta-adrenergic blocker that has been shown to reduce systolic blood pressure. It is a selective beta-1 antagonist and is not active on beta-2 receptors. Bunitrolol also inhibits the transport of calcium ions into the cytosol, leading to cell lysis. This drug has been shown to have cardiac effects in rats, reducing the contractility of the heart and increasing its rate of relaxation. Bunitrolol has also been shown to inhibit protein synthesis at the ribosome level by inhibiting enzymes involved in this process, such as deaminase and aminopeptidase. In addition, bunitrolol has been shown to be an inhibitor of P-glycoprotein (Pgp) in vitro, which may lead to increased bioavailability in vivo.
