Bismuth(III) fluoride is a compound that is used in water treatment. It is added to the water as an agent that removes impurities, such as fluorides, through chemical reactions. Bismuth(III) fluoride is also used for dental hygiene and in low-energy lighting applications. Bismuth(III) fluoride can be synthesized using several methods, including solid-phase synthesis, electrochemical synthesis, or solution phase synthesis. The product is a white solid powder with low solubility in water. Reaction of bismuth(III) fluoride with hydrogen fluoride produces the gas fluorine and other reaction products, such as water vapor and x-ray diffraction data. The fluorine reacts with oxygen to form ozone which can cause respiratory irritation when inhaled in large quantities.
