(-)-1,2-Bis[(2R,5R)-2,5-diethylphospholano]benzene (DIPE) is a chiral ligand that binds to metal ions in a trans configuration. It is used as a catalyst for the alkylation of thionyl chloride with malonate esters. DIPE has been shown to have high optical purity and can be used as an optical reagent for the preparation of optically pure trans-stilbene with a yield of up to ˜70% from racemic trans-stilbene.
