Barium iodide dihydrate is used as a catalyst for the oxidation of alcohols to form carboxylic acids. The oxidation product is usually acetaldehyde or acetic acid, with other products being carbon dioxide and water. The product may be isolated by distillation or extraction with an organic solvent such as ether or benzene.
