Butyl disulfide is a dibutyl compound that has antiinflammatory activity. It is also used as a sealant in the construction industry. Butyl disulfide reacts with hydrochloric acid to form an ester, methyl pentanoate, and hydrogen chloride in a 1:1 mole ratio. The reaction is exothermic and the activation energy for this process is 29.2 kcal/mol. This chemical has been shown to have reactive properties due to its ability to cross-link polymers, which makes it useful in construction as a sealant.
