2-(2-Benzothiazolylthio)ethanol (BTE) is a fluorescence probe that can be used to detect the presence of hydrogen bonds or chemical ionization. It has been shown to react with human liver through salt metathesis and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. BTE is membrane permeable and intramolecularly reacts with hydrogen, forming a disulfide bond.
BTE is also a silylating agent which can react with biological samples, such as proteins and DNA, in order to modify their structure. This probe has been used in the detection of nitro groups on nitrogen atoms.
