Description:

1-Bromooctadecane is a brominated octadecanoic acid that is used to prepare quaternary ammonium salts. It is used in the preparation of hydrophobic polymers and as a precursor for brominated lubricants. The Friedel-Crafts reaction of 1-bromooctadecane with aluminum chloride produces an octadecyl halide, which can be reacted with chloroform to produce an octadecyl alcohol. This alcohol can then be quaternized by reacting it with methyl chloride or ethyl chloride to form a quaternary ammonium salt. 1-Bromooctadecane has been shown to have a cell culture effect on human fibroblast cells, and has been studied for its use in tissue culture as well. It also has chemical properties that make it useful for electrochemical studies.
