1-Bromocarbonyl-1-methylethyl acetate is a synthetic chemical with antiviral activity. It is synthesized by reacting hydrochloric acid with triethyl orthoformate in the presence of chloride to form 1-bromocarbonyl-1-methylethyl acetate. The compound was shown to be active against the influenza virus, herpes simplex virus type 1, and varicella zoster virus. It inhibits the protein synthesis of these viruses by interfering with the function of their ribosomes. The compound was also shown to be able to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in vitro and in animal models. This compound can also be used as a building block for other compounds that have cytotoxic effects on cancer cells.
