Butyl chloroacetate (BCA) is a reactive organic compound that can be used as an intermediate for the production of pesticides. It is also used in the synthesis of oxalic acid and its esters. It is a colorless liquid with a strong, pungent, irritating odor. Reaction products are formed when butyl chloroacetate reacts with metal ions such as iron or copper. The reaction mechanism involves the formation of a cationic polymerization between the chloride ion and oxalacetic acid. The rate of the reaction depends on the concentration of BCA and time. A catalyst such as hydrochloric acid is required to make this reaction proceed quickly.
The pesticidal activity of BCA has been demonstrated by a number of studies that have shown its effectiveness against various pests, including thrips, aphids, and mites.
