Product Information
Methyl 2-(benzyloxy)acetate is a natural product isolated from a marine sponge. It has been shown to be an effective antifungal agent which inhibits the growth of mold and yeast. Methyl 2-(benzyloxy)acetate is an epoxide with a grignard reagent, giving it the ability to react with hydroxyl groups. This property makes methyl 2-(benzyloxy)acetate a useful kinetic inhibitor of cap-dependent endonucleases, such as those found in bacteria. The compound was also found to inhibit the growth of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics through its inhibition of protein synthesis. This inhibition is believed to be due to methyl 2-(benzyloxy)acetate's binding to the ribosome, preventing tRNA from binding during protein synthesis.
