2-(Benzylamino)-3-hydroxypropanoic acid is a synthetic amino acid that is an intermediate in the production of collagen. It has been shown to have pharmacokinetic properties and to inhibit platelet activation by inhibiting the release of arachidonic acid, which is a precursor for prostaglandin synthesis. 2-(Benzylamino)-3-hydroxypropanoic acid has also been shown to be antithrombotic, with effects similar to those of heparin. There are two chiral centers in this compound, at carbons 3 and 4. This compound can exist as either a racemic mixture or as two separate enantiomers. The chiral center at carbon 3 can exist as either a cis or trans configuration, while the chiral center at carbon 4 can exist as either a (S) or (R) configuration.
