Butyl sulfone is a chemical compound that can be used as a cross-linking agent in the production of polymers. It has an inhibitory effect on polymerization reactions and is capable of inhibiting the polymerase chain reaction. Butyl sulfone is also able to form a cationic polymerization with nitrogen atoms, which leads to light emission when the magnesium salt is irradiated with ultraviolet light. The covalent bond that forms between butyl sulfone and chlorine atoms makes this chemical more resistant to radiation than other cross-linkers. Butyl sulfone has a high water permeability and hydroxyl group content, making it possible for this chemical to be used as an additive for compounds such as poly(vinyl chloride) or poly(ethylene).
