Description

Benzylmagnesium chloride is a reactive organometallic compound that can be used in the synthesis of organic molecules. It is a salt metathesis catalyst, with a rate constant of 10-10 M-1 s-1 at 25 °C. This compound has been shown to be effective in the asymmetric synthesis of 5-membered heteroaryl compounds and HIV infection. Benzylmagnesium chloride will also coordinate to nitrogen atoms and form an organometallic complex with steric interactions. The crystal structure of this compound has been determined using x-ray crystallography, showing two distinct geometries: one for the 5-membered heteroaryl ligand and the other for an HIV protease inhibitor.
