Product Information

Name:
Balofloxacin dihydrate
Synonyms:
  • (+/-)-1-Cyclopropyl-6-fluoro-1,4-dihydro-8-methoxy-7-[3-(methylamino)-1-piperidinyl]-4-oxo-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid dihydrateBalo xinQ 35
Description:

Balofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits the DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes that maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA. It binds to bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. Balofloxacin has been shown to be effective against antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria, including human serum resistant strains. This drug also has long-term toxicity studies in rats, which showed no significant adverse effects on body weight, organ weights or histopathology. Balofloxacin also shows antimicrobial activity against many types of microorganisms including Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as fungi. The mechanism of action is thought to involve inhibition of DNA topoisomerase and DNA gyrase enzymes in the bacterial cell wall.
